About the K9 Unit

The Mount Pleasant Police Department's K9 Unit plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and security of our community. Our highly trained K9 teams consist of skilled officers paired with specially trained police dogs, working together to perform a variety of law enforcement tasks. These teams are an indispensable asset to our department, assisting in everything from suspect apprehension to narcotics detection.

K9 Team Training

Each K9 officer and dog undergo extensive training at accredited law enforcement K9 academies. This training covers obedience, tracking, narcotics detection, suspect apprehension, building searches, officer protection, and, in some cases, electronics detection. The dogs in our unit are carefully selected for their intelligence, agility, and strong work ethic. The bond between the handler and the dog is crucial to their effectiveness. Our K9 teams train regularly to maintain their skills and readiness, ensuring that they are always prepared to respond to any situation.

K9 Services Provided

  • Narcotics Detection: Our K9s are trained to detect a wide range of illegal substances. They assist in searches of vehicles, buildings, and public spaces to help keep drugs off the streets.
  • Suspect Apprehension: The presence of a K9 often serves as a deterrent to fleeing suspects. When necessary, our K9s are deployed to locate and apprehend suspects who pose a threat to public safety.
  • Search and Rescue: In cases of missing persons or lost children, our K9s' tracking abilities are invaluable. They can quickly cover large areas and often locate individuals more efficiently than human search teams.
  • Building and Area Searches: When there is a need to search a building or area for hidden suspects, our K9s are sent in first to ensure the safety of officers and civilians.
  • Community Engagement: The K9 Unit is also active in community outreach. Our teams participate in demonstrations at schools, community events, and public safety presentations, showcasing the abilities and importance of police dogs in modern law enforcement.
