COP House

History

Historically, criminal and nuisance-type activity was prevalent in the Lakeside neighborhood. This caused a strain on police and other services and often required a multiple-officer response to calls for service.  We learned through examples from the Racine Police Department (RPD) and the creator of Community Oriented Policing (COP) houses, the late Chief Richard Polzin of RPD, that a properly operated COP house was designed to help reduce criminal activity and ordinance violations, bring in needed services, build public trust, and create opportunities. The goal was to improve the quality of life for our Lakeside residents and overall community.

Mount Pleasant sought to incorporate a COP House in our Lakeside neighborhood. The COP House was made possible through generous financial assistance from S.C. Johnson & Son, as well as other local entities. In 2014, the COP house was constructed in an empty lot at 2237 Mead Street. Police operations began from the COP house in 2015.

Current

Since COP House operations commenced, several officers were privileged to fill the role of COP House officer. Pairs of officers work together to bring in new energy and ideas that make a lasting positive imprint in the lives of our citizens. This endeavor has been an uplifting experience for the citizens, based on their feedback and involvement in planned events and activities. This operation has been equally rewarding for the COP House officers! As relationships form between residents and the police, officers are energized. They lead many new important COP initiatives and develop a deeper appreciation for this community.

Community Oriented Policing Officers focus on the needs of the community. They seek opportunities for positive interactions with children and families while addressing criminal activity. Through daily interactions, meetings, and structured activities between COP officers and the public, needs and deficiencies were identified. Partnerships with neighborhood businesses and organizations continue to develop to deter crime and nuisance activity, resulting in safer environments for families.
