Many electronics can no longer be put in the trash; instead, they must be recycled as hazardous waste. Electronics contain valuable materials that can be recovered through responsible recycling. Electronics also contain hazardous materials such as lead or mercury, which may be harmful to human health or the environment if not properly disposed of.
Household batteries should be kept out of trash and recycling bins, but they can be disposed or recycled in other ways. When compacted in the back of a recycling truck, household batteries can sometimes explode and start fires that damage equipment and put people at risk. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources provides guidance on how to safely dispose of the many different types of household batteries, and many can also be brought to local businesses or to the Village's annual Electronics Recycling Collection events.

Acceptable Items
At the electronics recycling collection event, residents and businesses can drop off their electronics for safe recycling and disposal. The items listed below are accepted. Generally, if an item plugs into an outlet or runs on batteries, it can be recycled. For questions about specific items, contact Legacy Recycling.
Alkaline batteries – AAA, AA, and other forms commonly plugged into toys, remote controls and smoke alarms, for example – are NOT accepted. Please bring those instead to the Racine Wastewater Utility’s regional Household Hazardous Waste collection events. Household rechargeable batteries, including for vehicles, power tools, and computers, are accepted at Village Electronics Recycling Collection events.
