Domestic Abuse Statement and Rights

If you are the victim of domestic abuse, you may contact a domestic violence victim service provider to plan for your safety and take steps to protect yourself, including filing a petition under 813.12 of the Wisconsin Statutes for a domestic abuse injunction or under 813.125 of the Wisconsin Statutes for a harassment injunction.

This service aims to help victims by notifying them if an offender is to be released or if a temporary restraining order is served. Victims can sign up for notification alerts online or by phone.

An innocent victim who suffers injury from a crime may apply to the State of Wisconsin for injury or death benefits. Injuries may include medical and mental health expenses, lost wages, loss of financial support, reasonable replacement costs of property being held as evidence, and funeral expenses. Witness Rights
Witnesses have the following rights upon request:

  • Assistance with employer problems
  •  Reasonably safe and secure waiting area
  • Speedy disposition of the case
  • Expeditious return of property when no longer needed as evidence
  • Notification of the final disposition, including dismissal or amendment of charges
  • Reasonable protection from harm and threats of harm
  • Information regarding financial assistance and other social services available, and how to apply for those services, including witness fees and travel reimbursement for testifying.
